about

This release contains 2 digitised versions of our fateful gig at French's Tavern/Wine Bar on the 11th August 1978.

The 1st 25 tracks contain almost raw extractions from cassette (in HD) including all captured audience reactions, glass throwing, 'hippie' taunts, etc. This was digitised in 2022 and comes from the only cassette that actually plays now. From track 18 onwards the quality gets worse and worse and the tape is hardly playable at the end (and speeds up as well) so I have combined the last 3 tracks into one. The equipment used to record was relatively primitive and there is little EQ applied to any of these tracks so it's as raw as they come.

The last set of tracks are repeats but digitised in 2001 from a 3rd gen dub cassette edited by Peter Nelson. The quality is a little better and the excess and bad sounding tracks are omitted as well. At least it has listenable versions of the last songs we played. These are in CD standard not HD.

The cover image comes from a gig at Streatfield Press around the same time as the French's gig so contains all the same players (and Peter on the left who provided the slide show at both gigs). On the right is Bruce Stalder who left the band at the end of the night. Thanks to David Fagan for this polaroid image.

Overall I suppose it should be treated as an historical document of a particularly exciting time in our lives. Actually getting the nod to play at a venue was amazing for us and, even though we would never play there again (due to the adverse reaction), French's is steeped in inner Sydney rock history so I'm glad we have this document to 'enjoy'.

Listening back I'm surprised at the amount of cover versions we played but I suppose we didn't have that many actual songs at that stage. Most of the original material is out there improv style or largely instrumental. No doubt this added to the vitriol from non-friends in the audience. And the rolling snippets of conversation from the people near the recorder are sometimes misogynistic. Those were the times I suppose but still deplorable.

Don't pay for this if you don't want to... really.
